The toy series started around 6 years ago with "The Silver Pursuit". The plane was John's and my 7th wedding anniversary present to each other, and the next year was "The Sahara" - a tin car I found at a flea market in Paris with my daughter.
The day I decided to paint them. I was looking around the house for something to paint because it was too cold to go out, and set up the first toy still life, using the plane. I love the bouncing of colors in shadows and striking highlights on metal, and was totally hooked. It's not just about painting vintage toys, it's about the objects as a painting - just as a nude, or a marsh - it's making something familiar into something with a bit of magic.
