SUPPLY LIST
The most important thing when you are
traveling and painting plein air is simplicity. You need to easily
carry all of your gear. It is recommended that that you have
experimented with your colors, brushes, and easel prior to the
workshop. This will make you more comfortable packing up your gear in
the morning when we are off to paint.
Travel Advice Below
These are the colors I use primarily, but
please feel comfortable bringing the palette you are used to., with
the exception that they must be Professional paint,
not student grade.
(I use Windsor Newton and Shiva for most, but please do NOT bring WINTON brand)
There is a large difference between Professional and Student grade so
spend the extra and get quality.
SUGGESTED PAINT
COLORS:
Blue Black
Burnt Sienna (NOT Gamblin)
Cad Yellow Light (Gamblin is best)*
Cad Orange (Gamblin is best)
Alizarin Crimson
Titanium white
Ultramarine Blue
Yellow Ochre
*This cadmium yellow light is very
important . Lemon yellow can be substituted, but cadmium yellow
regular won’t work. The Gamblin cad yellow light is very cool yellow
which can be used to make all the other warmer yellows. It
really is the best if you want to carry just one yellow.
BRUSHES
Robert Simmons
Signet or Windsor & Newton Winton Green Handles
Filberts – 2,6,8
Brights – 2,6,8
One long thing pallet knife.
One scrape off tool (long handle, slanted

PANELS*:
www.canvaspanels.com Sourcetek has
great panels that I use primarily
www.Jerrysartarama.com Panelli Telati canvas on hard board,
www.raymarart.com Raymar canvas or linen boards,
You will be doing lots of 6x8’s, some
8x10’s or comparable in size. Please bring enough panels for at least 3
paintings per day. Bring what you like, but remember smaller is betterveling.
*Please, do NOT bring Fredrix painting
panels.
MEDIUM:
Turpentine Provided
EASELS:
Open Box M Pallet /
Panel Holder
$195
(what I use in the 8x10 size)
Classic Slim Line
or the Kevin McPherson one
(also a good choice)
Please do not bring
a French Easel - they are heavy, cumbersome, tend to break, and
not suited to travel.
TRAVEL HINTS: When
traveling, the biggest rule is to SIMPLIFY
Below are a few hints on how I travel and hopefully help you in
your travels. (Regulations change continuously with airlines so
please check their rules before flying)
I travel with a
wheeled bag (see samples below) that has a detachable backpack on the
front. I try to carry everything on board, stashing the bigger one
above, and keeping the smaller one with passport, money, medicines,
etc below. I put the paints in a clear baggie, and put that in the bin
at security along with the bag of liquids (shampoo, etc) to show
them. If I decide to check one bag and carry on one bag - I always
make sure I have my easel, and all I need for painting in the one bag
that goes on the plane w/ me. Those painting supplies, my camera and
one change of clothes are really all I need, if the other bag goes
elsewhere. Please on international trips, always take your painting
supplies on the plane w/ you. They're hard to replace.
Notes:
Mineral Spirits will be provided for you on all international
trips.
Pack copies of your passport and tickets in each bag.
Please don't try to ship your painting gear to another country.
Shoes & Clothing:
Again
- keep it simple. I bring one pair of pants or jeans to wear on the
plane, two skirts, four t-shirts, a pair of shorts, a lightweight
jacket, and a large scarf or pashmini that can dress an outfit
up and keep me warm in the evening. If I stick to that I do very well
and don't carry around extra clothing . And, I can always add
something when I get there.
